Facet Overview:

Health & Human

       Services

The goal of the Health & Human Services Facet is to promote and facilitate programs that support the maintenance of good health and the elimination of chronic health disparities in communities of color.

The Health & Human

Services Facet serves:

  • WHY?  In response to the chronic health disparities that persist in black communities and result in the decreased life expectancy of African Americans and other people of African ancestry.

  • HOW? We serve our communities through education, health advocacy, and optimal utilization of health resources.

Programs & Initiatives

  • This program seeks to eradicate inequities and reduce cancer screening disparities through community outreach and education. Ambassadors receive training and ongoing support to effectively provide outreach and education related to breast and colorectal cancer prevention and early detection.

  • HeartLinks encourages members and the communities we serve to take an aggressive stance against heart disease, the number one killer of African-American women, by equipping our members with ways to implement heart-healthy programs in our communities such as Walk for Healthy Living and Childhood Obesity Prevention.

  • Our goal is to decrease disparities in organ, tissue and bone marrow donor registration and transplantation in the African American community. We work to increase the number of registered donors through community-based events and multi-media awareness campaigns.

  • This initiatives ensures that members and the communities we serve understand the incidence and prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the African-American community, how these infections are transmitted, and how the disease can be prevented. We partner with national organizations that specialize in educating and preventing HIV/AIDS.

  • Our goal is to educate members about depression, anxiety, and social issues that impact our physical and mental health so that we can take this knowledge into our communities. This initiative collaborates with all Facets to incorporate a wellness component into all of our programs.

  • This initiative strives to increase awareness of ongoing disparities and inequities in oral health among adults and children. We partner with Colgate in the implementation of their Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program to teach youth about proper oral care and how oral care impacts overall health.
